On an impulse while laying in bed, I decided that I couldn’t miss the 2026 Lunar Eclipse without something to show for it. Eclipses are cool enough to warrant losing the sleep but this time I decided to try my hand at learning a workflow for capturing and stitching the images together. My telescope is not actuated so I know that I am leaving resolution on the table- but the two photos below show my attempt to stitch together two moments during the early morning eclipse: 1) At the start of the eclipse (roughly 3 AM my time) when the shadow of the earth just started to catch the moon and 2) later when the entire moon was eclipsed. I clearly have some learning to do when it comes to dialing in the exposure and synchronization but I’m proud of the result nonetheless.

Lunar Eclipse Blood Moon from March 3, 2026

Start of the lunar eclipse March 3, 2026

Lunar Eclipse March 2026 I have a roughly 8″ Dobsonian telescope that I will occasionally try to capture significant celestial events.
